SHINGLES...are not just found on your roof!!

Well, I'm back from NY...actually got home late on the 21st and flew home sick. I started getting sick Friday evening after I arrived. (flu like symptoms, aching and nausea...along with welts on my left eyelid and in the hairline) I had been outside playing catch with my grandson and thought I had been bitten by gnats.

I just kept getting worse and the headache...oh my. We did have my birthday dinner on Saturday, but it was hard to enjoy.

Monday we started looking for a doctor I could go to. The doctor took one look at my forehead, hairline and eye...diagnosed me with SHINGLES and prescribed 'mega antibiotics". I still tried to object, even as I was sent to an eye doctor because of concern that the eye was involved. (I had spots on the lid and it was swollen and itchy). I still thought I had gnat bites!!

The eye doctor confirmed...SHINGLES. The good news was that the eye itself showed no signs of infection. I was to fly back on Tuesday...thought about canceling my flight as I was so sick but I just wanted to get home and to my own bed and my own physicians. (I was told that with 24 hours of antibiotics in me I would not be contagious.)

So, Tuesday morning, looking and feeling pretty rough, I covered the offending part of my forehead and eye with Neosporen...covered that with makeup...carefully combed my hair (the left side of my head was now involved and very sore)...put on some big sunglasses and headed to the airport. (Hoping people would just think that perhaps I was an 'old movie star' and not notice how sick I was.)

After two doctor visits, four appointments with the optomitirst, various antibotics, pain pills, and lots of PRAYERS from everyone... I'm going back to work this week (both Salon and Tech Support).

Despite everything...I am surely blessed. My flight home was good, my eyesight was unaffected, and I have this wonderful support system of friends. They brought in groceries, meals, and took me to my doctor appointments. They called my salon customers...no small job in itself.

Most importantly...they prayed.

It's so good to once again be part of a functioning society...good to be alive!
Sincerely,
Marsha

Marsha, I'm so sorry to hear about your trying time, but your positive attitude must have helped your recovery. I hope you feel 100% again soon!

Oh.... Everyone I know who has had shingle has said they are absolutely miserable to have... I am sooooo sorry you've got them.

After they devised the vaccine I decided to get it even though I know it's not 100% effective.

Get well soon and keep that beautiful positive outlook!

So, sorry Marsha, but very glad to hear you are on the mend and that you have no lasting repercussions. I am also glad you have such a wonderful support system. Take it easy, even if you have to go back to work. Angela

Marsha - I'm so sorry to hear you've had shingles. Do be careful about over-taxing yourself or straining your eyes as like a lot of nasty virsuses it takes a little more time to get over it properly.

Thank you to everyone for your kind thoughts and well wishes. This was quite an ordeal and yes Katherine I did go back to work too early.

I worked slow and made it through the week with a lighter schedule doing just what I had to.

A week later now and I do feel much better...but still have those nerve ending 'zings'. I guess I can expect this for some time.

I could feel everyone's concern and prayer.

What a blessing.

Marsha: I cannot believe you left to go home. You should have stayed put. I have not had the Shingles yet- But I had Bells Palsy. I was young! It floored me. Guess what? Like those Shingles - it stays with you for sometime. I was lucky. My eye finally shut. My tongue quit hanging out of my mouth.
The bad thing I have been told about Shingles is that it can become a syndrome disease or Chronic. Please ask your doctor about this. Make sure you get it all out of your system. The person that has told me this -- worked for doctors- She works everyday- and she swears She has chronic Shingles.
I saw my Aunt suffer with Shingles. It was awful -- She always wore Her makeup. She was terrified of Her Husband seeing Her without makeup.
You must be one tough Cookie! She was really bad off and weak for like 3 months.
Please Take care.

Oh Marsha what an ordeal! I hope you are better now. I've been battling some health problems lately and can certainly relate to those zingers - only it's more like a bolt of lightening that hits my leg every so often knocking me completely off my feet and then I cry like a baby until the pain is gone. I loved that you pretend to be an older movie star traveling home - great attitude to have. Hang in there - I'll keep you in my prayers.
